Dark Souls Remastered: Painted World of Ariamis map


The Painted World of Ariamis is an optional area in Dark Souls Remastered. It takes a little work to even get there. First, you’ll have to return to the Northern Undead Asylum and retrieve the
Peculiar Doll
from your prison cell. Then you’ll have to fight your way through the Painting Guardians in Anor Londo.

The Painted World is a relatively small location, but it’s dense in terms of level design, enemies, and useful items.

You’ll find plenty of souls-granting items scattered throughout the area, two pyromancies, one miracle, an always-valuable
Ring of Sacrifice
, and a few Humanities. There are also two light armor sets and a really powerful rapier (our favorite in the game). Once you retrieve the
Annex Key
from the catacombs under the area, you’ll be able to find the
Dark Ember
which you can give to
Andre

of Astora
in Undead Parish.

The ring of
Phalanx
in the middle of the area are a great way to farm souls. While strong, they’re slow and vulnerable to fire and poison, once you open the nearby door right next to the bonfire. Taking them out will earn you roughly 8,000 souls (or more).

Miyazaki
: We drew a great deal of concept art for the Painted World. It was actually based on the map used in the Dark Souls prototype. Of course, the prototype is your chance to really get your vision for the game across so we spent a lot of time on the area. So much, that I really wanted to use it in the full game but I couldn't find a way to make it fit with the other areas. In the end I cheated and put it in the Painted World.

: It's the only area with snow so it would be hard to put it anywhere else.


Miyazaki
: Yes. It may sound like a poor solution, but I actually had an image for the Painted World from the start, I'm just happy I was able to combine that image and the prototype map.


Otsuka
: It was here you decided to put the former heroine Priscilla, wasn't it?


Miyazaki
: Yes. I think she works well here, she's kind of snow-coloured after all…. But I also think of the Painted World as a place where someone who's being chased might go to escape, and she fits that description.


Waragai
: Like she's been chased away from her natural place?


Miyazaki
: Yes, although "natural place" means something slightly different in this case.
