A key benefit of buying your mattress from a mattress store is that you get to try the mattress before you make your purchase. You can lie down on it, bounce on it, roll around on it, and find your best sleeping position before deciding that it's the right mattress for you.

When shopping online, you make your choice based on photos or information presented by the mattress retailer and by reading online mattress reviews. Some mattresses, like Purple, can be ordered online and also found in mattress or furniture stores, so you can try them out firsthand. If you're the type of person that needs to see a mattress in person before buying, Purple gives you this option by partnering with select mattress stores.

Even if you want to purchase your mattress online, it can sometimes be helpful to visit a quality mattress showroom so you can get an idea of mattress dimensions and mattress types . PORTLAND, Ore. — Mattress World is closing all seven of its company-owned area stores after it was hit with a Washington state warrant for about $1.7 million in delinquent sales taxes, according to a story in the Vancouver, Wash., Columbian.

In a letter posted on the Portland-based retailer‘s website, Mattress World’s Sherri Hiner said the company grew quickly but wasn’t prepared for a downturn, "and when the recession hit, it negatively impacted our business."

She said the company made adjustments over the past two years, but the bill from Washington state Department of Revenue, which it considers an "excessive and unfair tax assessment … created an unrecoverable financial blow, which has been reflected in our customer service and has done great harm to the reputation Mattress World worked hard to build."

The warrant apparently seeks sales taxes for goods Mattress World sold to residents of neighboring Washington, even though the chain has no stores in the state.

Hiner’s letter said Mattress World’s Canby Ore., and downtown Portland stores are independently owned and will remain open.

Portland-based Mattress World is closing after 15 years, except for two locations in Canby and Northeast Portland that are independently operated.

Hiner said her company collapsed under the one-two punch of the recession and an unexpected $2 million tax bill from the state of Washington. Hiner, who had been featured in her company’s commercials through the years along with her family, began a series of liquidation sales in mid-November but maintained through early December that she was simply holding an aggressive sale to help her business get back on track.

Hiner said she was dinged by the state of Washington for selling and delivering mattresses to Washington residents without collecting sales taxes. Hiner, who said the state audited her files back to 2003, said she wasn’t aware she had to collect sales taxes if she didn’t have a physical store in that state.
