New Scottish Bream Record
We are delighted to announce that the SFCA Record Fish Committee has been able to verify the claim for a new Scottish Record for a Common Bream (Abramis brama) at 17lb 12oz (8.051kg).
The new Record was captured by Callum Williams using a home made ‘pop-up’ boilie legered on Castle Loch, Lochmaben, Dumfries & Galloway. Callum was down on the Loch trying to target some of its elusive big carp when the huge Bream picked up his bait. The Capture was witnessed by other anglers, William Colquhoun and Finlay Smeaton. Callum said that he, like many others, had feared that the legendary big bream had long since died out in Castle Loch as there had been no reported captures for many years. He was therefore unsure what he had hooked until he slipped the net under the magnificent fish. He was particularly surprised by the depth and width of the fish which, while clearly old, seemed to be in excellent condition.
Callum had his Scales tested and the weight verified using the SFCA Record Fish Sponsorship arrangement with Reuben Heaton and said that the service was very quick and efficient.
The previous record was also from Castle Loch and
The biggest bream ever caught during a mainland fishing competition was the stand-out catch during the grand final of the Squidgy Southern Bream Series, held on the NSW South Coast over the weekend.

Adrian Van. Together with team mate Wes Murphy, Van was fishing the shallow edges of the basin and caught the monster fish on an Ecogear blade.

. That single fish managed, however, to put the boys in 22nd place!
The two-day grand final was staged by the Basin Lure and Fly Club with day 1 being held in the basin and day 2 in the Shoalhaven River.
Rainy and cool conditions for the Shoalhaven River round resulted in fairly difficult fishing conditions, but competitors toughed it out with most teams catching quality bream.
The event was won by Team Shimano Evinrude (Alan Loftus and Ross Cannizzaro) with a solid bag of 6.765 kilos. Local anglers Scott Sharpe and Grant Kime, fishing as Team Culburra Bait and Tackle, took se
The British bream record has been beaten following the capture of a fish weighing in at a colossal 23lb. Smashing the previous best for the species by nearly 3lb.
The huge fish was landed by specimen Carp angler Scot Crook from Cambridgeshire’s Ferry Lagoon, a water that has been well known for a number of years for its record breaking potential following the capture a British record in bream in 2005 at 19lb 10oz and of a 22lb 9oz bream in 2009 by carp angler Mark McKenna. It is believed that the fish is actually the same bream caught by Mark.
On its latest visit to the bank, the heavyweight specimen was taken with another huge bream weighing 18lb 8oz, enabling the Scot to lay claim to landing the biggest brace of the species in history, even though he wasn’t targeting them at the time.
The two fish are thought to be virtually the only bream in the 200-acre venue, which is located near Holywell in Cambridgeshire and is part of the complex of gravel pits that makes up the Fen Drayton Lakes RSPB reserve.
Most members of the syndicate which operates on Ferry Lagoon target its low stock of very large carp, and indeed the last three captures of record-busting bream h
