Monster Hunter Wilds: The Best Weapon Tree To Invest In First

When you're new to

Monster Hunter Wilds

- or even
Monster Hunter
as a whole - the weapon tree can be incredibly confusing. Although
Wilds
is designed to appeal to new players, simplifying several aspects of the
Monster Hunter
formula and designing early-game monsters to serve as a tutorial, one thing that hasn't changed a bit is its system of weapon upgrades and character progression. As always, your character's level doesn't count for much: what really makes you stronger, over the course of the game, is the incrementally better sets of weapons and armor you're able to craft.

So, say you're a new player who's done your first couple of hunts, and decided on a weapon type you'd like to stick with long-term. You know you're supposed to upgrade your weapon over time to stay competitive, but
one look at the Smithy's weapon upgrade table, and your head starts to spin
. There are too many numbers on the screen, and you don't know what any of them do. Some weapons seem so far out of reach, and others just show up as "
???
" in the menu. Thankfully, it's a lot less complicated than it seems.

How Monster Hunter W

Best weapon for each tree since people keep asking (almost)

1. Sword and Shield: Teostra's Emblem (subject to change when Kulve DLC comes, note however note that status effects are really good on this weapon since you hit a lot, meaning if a monster is very weak to a certain status ailment they can be a better choice)

2. Great Sword: Jagras Hacker (yes I know it's stupid, but with three augmentations and elementless jewel it beats every GS, subject to change when a couple of DLC comes *Wyvern Ignition*)

3. Long Sword: Divine Slasher (with elementless jewel and affinity and handicraft no sword even comes close, there will be good contenders when several DLC arrives but this sword still takes the cake)

4. Dual Blades: This is kind of hard to answer and here is why, these weapon hit the most and fastest in the game meaning that status ailment and elements are the best on these weapons, so I can't give a definite answer because it heavily depends on the monster. My personal favourite is Fire and Ice. I recommend reading this thread for a more detailed explanation (https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/211368-monster-hunter-world/76290641)

5. Hammer: Diablos Shatte

Weapon trees are imbalanced AF, right?

I look into the weapons, and I feel like every time I look at some elder dragon weapon or something else that looks cool, my basic weapons are not just better, they are a lot better.

Best example is Odogaron tree in most weapons. Not only does it have absolute garbage damage numbers, you also need to awaken the element, and the element is fire.

other example is I wanted to build a Daora IG since it looks cool, but compared to my Devilhjo IG it looks pathetic, so I'd grind for a down grade.

I still didn't get to Iceborn, if that changes something, having fun preparing for it for now.

But generally am I missing something, or is 60% of weapons in this game just a not viable garbage?

EDIT: just to be clear, I never touched defender
