Yes,
I know I’m not hugely into middle-grade books anymore and I am aware that affects my feelings towards this book. But I picked it up at a book fair or book swap or something a long time ago, and when it fit a readathon prompt this month, I decided to read it regardless.


The
book does have a lot of elements that I enjoy generally. The secondary world was interesting because it was a lot more modern than other fantasy settings. The patterns of speech, the technology, the ways of life all felt more recent than your typical medieval-or-equivalent setting.


Parallel
universes/gateways between worlds are also my jam, though we didn’t actually get to see a whole of lot of any other worlds until right at the end.


Jane
Doe is a fun character. She’s very mouthy and opinionated, something I feel a lot of MG/YA characters don’t get to be. So I liked that. She has spent most of her 14 years locked in a basement, with only a fe
